What is an electrical conductor?

An electric conductor allows electricity to pass through them easily. A few of the examples of such materials include iron, copper, aluminium, copper covered steel, silver and gold, where the electrons can move freely from one atom to another. However, all of the conductive metals do not possess the same level of conductivity.

Types of conductors:

• Copper:The most widely used conductive material, copper has high ductility, solderability, malleability and high melting point. It is also a highly corrosion resistant material.
• Copper-covered steel:It combines highly conductive and corrosion-resistant copper with high strength alloy steel.
• High-strength alloys:These conductive materials are more expensive than copper and copper covered steel wires. High- strength alloys include cadmium copper, zirconium copper and chromium copper.
• Stainless steel:Mostly used for medical lead wires and cables, stainless steel has poor conductivity as compared to others. However, their conductivity can be improved by gold plating the material.

Interesting facts on Conductors:

• Most of the high conductive materials are good conductors of heat.
• Temperature plays a significant role in the conductivity of a material. The higher the temperature, the lower the conductivity of the material.
• Although aluminium has lower conductivity than copper, it is used for wiring in place of copper. This is because aluminium is cheaper and lighter than copper.
